Birthday Party

Saturday we hosted Tilly's first birthday party. This, of course, is in contrast with the actual birthday celebration on her birthday 4 days earlier. She had approximately 60 of her closest friends and relatives (with some notable exceptions) in attendance, including godfather Uncle Alan who drove from Madison, Wisconsin.

As I expected, her favorite things were either sugary and covered in sprinkles, or crinkly and shiny paper or packaging on the outside of numerous plastic, bulky items. It was a celebration of community that we have here, and of rite of passage for her.

This time around, it really wasn't about her, in a way--it was about us having her. From here on out, though, she owns this day and this event. Next year, she'll understand more what it's all about and that there's something in it for her.

I will probably remember most her hushed, stunned look as she gazed around the living room and dining room while 35 or so people serenaded her with 'Happy Birthday'.

Tilly's Birthday 2

Chocolate = Good.

Tilly's Birthday 1

Today was Tilly's first birthday...so hard to believe that a year ago today, at 3:21 pm, she came into this world. We started the day at Cupcake with some chocolate pancakes, fruit and fresh squeezed orange juice. We made it to Como Zoo, too, and then Grandma Madeleine, Uncle Phil, Amanda and Mom and Dad had dinner with Tilly. She loved the chocolate cake. Annie loved cleaning up after her.

At Cupcake with My Cupcake

Hanging out, Sunday morning, at Cupcake. We had some buttermilk pancakes with caramelized pears. Tilly was, of course, saying hello and waving to everyone who came in to the place.

Easter Sunday Construction

Tilly in her Easter Dress. We went to church this morning, then just hung out at home. We're determined to get Tilly's room done in time for her birthday party on April 17. She was helping screw down the final layer of sub-floor in the sunroom that will be her toyroom.
